As 52 percent of women are left feeling ‘body conscious’ in a dressing room, Hammerson removes their retail leaseholders' mirrors.

On our minds is retail property giant Hammerson’s recent decision to remove changing room mirrors at some of their UK licensees’ stores. In response to a study showing that 52 percent of women are left feeling ‘body conscious’ after seeing themselves in the mirror, Hammerson is trialling the mirror-less dressing rooms meaning that they want women to buy an outfit “based on whether or not it makes them feel fabulous” as opposed to how it looks in “unflattering” changing room mirrors. The unconventional move has been next to ridiculed by fashion press which means that taking away the mirrors is taking away the feeling of privacy and control when trying on a garment in an individual mirrored dressing room. Critiques also mean that the action doesn’t address the bottom-line problem of making women feel bad about their bodies because of tiny ideals. Find one of the critical articles here
