We are always on the lookout for progressive ideas with a conscious purpose – and one that recently caught our interest is subtraction cutting. What's it all about?

We are always on the lookout for progressive ideas with a conscious purpose and one that recently caught our interest is subtraction cutting, an experimental method of cutting in hollow shapes developed by designer Julian Roberts. Designing in patterns rather than in illustrative drawings, the technique is an attempt to revert the manufacturing process by linking design, cutting, sewing, visual promotion and trading closer back together, cutting down the number of elements and reducing waste. Subtraction cutting can be used variously to make men’s and women’s fashion garments and Roberts is keen on teaching the technique to creatives meaning that anyone can learn it in a few hours.
