Hear, hear! This year, Polarn O. Pyret’s second hand-service celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Swedish childrenswear brand honors this by taking out their online concept (meaning: second hand sales on the site) to all stores in Sweden, Norway and Finland. This means, from this week onwards, customers are able to submit used PO.P outerwear in any store and get a voucher in return.

Here is how it works. One. Polarn O. Pyret’s customers submit their used (yet cleaned) PO.P outerwear in any store. Two. The store values the garment and compensates the customer based on the garment’s condition in form of a voucher. Three. The PO.P-store then sells the used garments on selected occasions.

”We believe that our customers will appreciate the simplicity of this arrangement. You avoid all the handling you otherwise have when selling online, like shipping. In addition, you can feel the garments and get guidance from the experts in store. We hope that this simplicity enables us to extend the lives for even more garments”, says Nanna Hedlund, CEO of Polarn O. Pyret.

Polarn O. Pyret is as ubiquitous to Swedish parents as Ikea in Swedish living rooms. The brand has worked hard with sustainability since its beginning. Already in 1987 the first garments in organic cotton were introduced and in 2010, well before circular economy was a concept, they launched second hand sales on their website.

”We have the goal of three children in each garment. Today, 55 percent of all our outerwear is passed on to three children or more. In the future, we hope that all our clothes will make this trip.”

Another major 2020-initiative is the launch of Polarn O. Pyrets Sustainability Promise (available to read here), which promises to significantly reduce production–since the most important thing one can do, as part of the clothing industry, is to produce fewer garments. Already in 2019 the brand reduced the number of garments made by 26 percent, and along 2020 they will reduce another 12 percent.
To sum it up: the number of new PO.P-items per year will be a little less. And the news released will live a little longer. Applause from us!
