The plastic detox continues! This time we’ve looked into ways of improving our everyday lunch routine, which is simply done by trading plastic containers and takeouts for a sustainable lunchbox in stainless steel. We’d say the higher price is well worth paying.

We all know that we have to heavily reduce our plastic consumption, and for a number of reasons; one being the effect it has on our environment and oceans. It’s said that it’s like a garbage truck of plastic waste is dumped into our oceans every minute, where it severely affects and damages the wildlife. Plastic decomposes very slowly and breaks down into micro particles – oil-based microplastics that accumulates toxic chemicals that normally wouldn’t be water-soluble. These then end up in aquatic organisms, and enter our systems via the food we eat.

Plastic is also known to hold toxic chemicals and hormone disturbing substances, like BPA, PVC, phthalates or BPS, which are released when in contact with food or water. So, where there is plastic – recycled or virgin – there is also a chance for microplastics or toxins to find their way into our bodies or out into nature. 

Now, in our quest to eliminate as much plastic as possible from our lives, the turn has come to look over our lunch routine, and more specifically: lunchboxes.

There are many good reasons to bring your own food to work, especially if you want to be sure that what you eat is clean, green and healthy; not to mention the economical benefits. But even more importantly: think about all the waste and litter that comes with a takeout lunch – bag, box, cup, lid, napkins, cutlery, a straw even – all of which you’ll throw away within an hour after receiving it (and probably straight in the bin if your office doesn’t have a recycling station). Crazy behavior, and a ridiculous waste of resources.

So, what are the options? There are glass containers, of course, but they’re honestly rather unpractical to carry around. Then there are the lunchboxes made from stainless, food-grade steel, which has become immensely popular over the past few years. It’s not only a hundred times more stylish than its plastic equivalent, but way more healthy and sustainable; a perfectly healthy zero-waste solution. It’s durable, long-lasting, hygienic, non-toxic and doesn’t give off or attract odors.

There are two things on the down side of stainless steel lunch boxes though, 1) they can’t be microwaved, and 2) they sometimes have a silicone seal in order to be completely leek free. However, while not a 100% natural material, food-grade silicone is a non-toxic polymer, mainly made from silica (sand). It’s safe to heat and freeze, as well as being odor and stain resistant, hypoallergenic and easy to clean. So might be ok.

Naturally, making steel does impact the environment too, but once it’s made, it can be recycled indefinitely. And unlike plastic – where supposedly about 1% is recycled globally (!) – steel is highly valued and therefore also highly recycled. That sounds like a better option to us.
