Embracing naturals long before most, classically trained nose Lyn Harris captures the variance across British seasons with delicacy and imagination – not to mention expertise – as Perfumer H.
The Marylebone store created with Maria Speake of Retrouvius opened quietly in 2015 to house both retail and laboratory, serving tea made bespoke by Postcard Teas. Inside you can observe how a perfumer works, which, the more you know about Harris, the more special the experience becomes.
Yorkshire-born, Lyn Harris earned her stripes in Paris under the tutelage of Monique Schlienger, followed by five years in Grasse at Robertet. Her fragrance house to this day, Lyn tells me when considering scent, consider first ‘The ingredients and the provenance. Robertet is the world’s best producer of naturals in the fragrance world. They work with farms and co operatives all over the world.’
There are three layers to the offering at Perfumer H. First are the seasonal scents (including Sweet Pea, Rain Cloud, Charcoal and Ink) then the laboratory editions (which for an extra fee can be made exclusive to the wearer) and finally bespoke. Inside you may see bits of bark, plant stems and flowers Harris herself has forgaged, inspiring the beginning of her process; forty different essences inform a fragrance, each essence with a code to enter into a formula as laid out by Robertet.
‘All our packaging is recyclable and our ethos is that our packaging is for life – from the hand blown bottle or candle vessel (we work with a local glass blower) we offer refills for both. All our packaging is made in the UK. The signature grey felt bag which you can use for life has become iconic’. The glass blower is Michael Ruh, together they developed a personalisation technique for etched, gold gilded lettering.
Perfumer H is Lyn Harris’ well crafted world, where nature reigns supreme and with Britishness at its core, we are welcomed to smell it.
