‘Minimal, ethical and organic’ – sweet words, especially when used to describe bedding. This is also the ethos of new Swedish company Read the Label, that launched their first collection of bed linen made from organic and Fairtrade certified cotton in the end of 2018. Their mission: To offer the most sustainable and ethical bedding on the market, while also being 100% transparent about their production. Well, you had us at hello.

Former PR consultant Anna Rydegran had a clear vision as she ventured into this project: to make the world’s best bed linen. However, while doing her research, she was rather shocked by the devastating facts she was faced with concerning the cotton industry in India. Being one of the biggest cotton producing countries in the world, it’s also widely corrupted by the heavy use of toxic pesticides and inhumane working conditions, which she says are so bad even that about 270,000 cotton farmers have taken their own lives in the past 15 years alone.

Having gained this knowledge, Anna teamed up with RCM Organic – one of India’s pioneering producers of organic and Fairtrade certified cotton – to make the high-quality cotton satin fabric for their bedding. If you’re a snob, you would also like to know that it’s made with long-staple cotton and has a 300 thread count. The fabric, which comes in white and grey, is also dyed with organic GOTS-certified pigments free from harmful chemicals. And in an effort to avoid waste, the finished bed linen comes in a matching drawstring bag, made out of leftover fabric from the production.

By choosing Fairtrade, you enable change by helping to improve labor and living conditions for the workers, while also empowering entire communities, protecting them from falling into poverty. This, we believe, is a responsibility all brands must take seriously, as there is no luxury without sustainability.
