Just like writers get writer’s block, I think it’s possible to get listener’s block. However much algorithms think they know what you like or you see new artists “tipped”, nothing sticks. That’s why this playlist is delayed – nothing was connecting, there wasn’t enough to love. Perhaps that’s why one of the songs is actually a cover, something familiar to get started. Cat Power (who usually has a powerful cover per album) singing Rihanna’s ‘Stay’ sent me back to a playlist of old Rihanna ballads, which can be a strong as her pop/R&B chart songs. There’s something classic in a lot of the others from Emma Louise asking “but if I can’t change? Will you still love me the same” in her deep tone (the album ‘Lilac Everything’ will sweep you up) and in the R&B of Summer Walker, whose tape ‘Last Day Of Summer’ has been a warmth in, yes, early autumn. That led to feeling the off-centre sound of duendita “I don’t want to hold your hand”. A trip around town with Anderson Paak & Kendrick Lamar and a late night south London bus with Moses Boyd & his London jazz collective. If you’re having listeners block too, hope this helps.
