“Today, buying sustainable fashion is a civil and political decision.”

If there is one piece of clothing that has really taken centre stage the last few seasons, it’s underwear. Sensual, sport-inspired, nude-scale knickers and soft bras market as both statement pieces and basics, championed by brands looking to celebrate femininity in natural light. Eco-centered Baserange were quick to the draw – their functional easywear and unretouched photography fronted by friends of the label managed to garner interest from Selfridges, Garmentory and Net-A-Porter seasons ago. We asked co-founder Blandine de Verdelhan how they make eco-friendly staples desirable and why buying sustainable fashion is a political act.

At Baserange, you make easywear that “exists somewhere between modern culture and the natural world.” What does that mean?

– It means that we are striving to create garments that allow women to move freely, to be comfortable with how they feel and look, and be themselves. We try to preserve nature as much as possible thanks to the processes we develop. The fabrics we select are soft, natural and raw and our collections offer a balance between tight and loose proportions. Our main focus is movements and comfort for the woman. We want to use as little retouching as possible – both in terms of images and production.

Who is the Baserange woman?

– Rather than one woman, Baserange addresses plenty of women. If you see our lookbooks, you will see that we don’t use professional models, but women we have met and who have inspired us in some way. For instance in our latest lookbook we worked with a group of friends and siblings. One of them, Berri Allen-Miller is a poet. She opened her house to us and wrote a poem as a preface to our lookbook. We’re not interested in producing polished images of an impossible and superficial beauty.

How do you make eco-friendly wardrobe staples interesting and desirable?

– Firstly it is how we produce it, hand in hand with the factories we’re working with. They’re based in Turkey, Portugal and South of France, we visit them regularly and have developed a strong relationship with them. They’re a key-element in our creative process, as we constantly learn form them. Secondly, we really focus on the feeling of wearing the clothes, maybe even more than how they look. The story behind makes it interesting and hopefully desirable!

How can sustainable fashion become more democratic?

– Today, buying sustainable fashion is a civil and political decision. It is more expensive, but it conveys values that are so important. To our delight, more and more beautiful sustainable brands pop out. Even big fashion groups are at least pretending to care and develop sustainable collections. The public is now educated and hopefully purchase less and better.

What are you imagining for Baserange next year?

– We want to continue what we’ve started, with the same enthusiasm. So we imagine more discoveries, travels, progress and encounters.
