Some folks travel with scented candles, I travel with incense. Preferably palo santo or a bundle of sage. Grounding goods giving me that homie feeling when away from home.

Incense and cologne from Juniper Ridge

Some folks travel with scented candles, I travel with incense. Preferably palo santo or a bundle of sage. Grounding goods giving me that homie feeling when away from home.

Local and natural incense have a permanent point on my lookout list. Natural rose incense from the rose valley of Pushkar and myrrh from an ancient monastery on Crete are a few of my favourite finds.

I went to see the Redwoods in Big Sur and got blown away by the forest fumes. Trying to take them with me, I gathered grass, leaves, pine cones and twigs and sealed them together in a zip-lock bag. I left it on the dashboard and when I got back to the car, after a surreal swim by the waterfalls, the Californian sun had evaporated their essential oils and the whole vehicle was deodorised by the Redwood forest.

I’ve still got that bag. A Redwood scented souvenir serving my memory with wild and vivid imagery of that kind that is too tall and ethereal to be captured by any digital device.

Some time ago I heard about the artisan guys behind wilderness perfumery Juniper Ridge. Their craft is a refined method of my bag from Big Sur. They go to the canyons, rivers, lakes, deserts and mountains of the wild west. Sourcing Mother Nature’s smorgasbord. Bottling the wilderness on their trail, sans synthetics but with utmost sensitivity and respect for the existing wildscape.

I brought Death Valley Campfire Incense and Topanga Canyon Backpacker’s Cologne with me to frame my dreamy time out here on Crete. Let’s call it New California.

And I wonder, are there really still backpackers in Topanga Canyon?
