These bangles have become a part of me
Cecilia Steiner is womenswear buyer at the multibrand store Nitty Gritty, located in the south of Stockholm. Her own impeccable style – and the pieces she selects to the store – reveals her eye for timeless “must have” pieces. We asked Cecilia about her Eternal Flame – a piece that she feels naked without.
“I have this thing for bangles. Or to be completely honest, jewelry in general. I have collected quite a few dear pieces over the years, but for about a decade now two of them have been worn far more than the rest. I believe we were somehow destined for each other, since the bangles in question are both vintage. I picked up the first one from a random tray in a rather messy booth at an antiques market outside Paris about ten years ago, it was love at first sight and cost me a mere 5€. Then, in London at Portobello Market about a year later, I weirdly enough found another one just like it. They are the exact same size and style, and I love the fact that one is a combination of steel and brass and one is made of plain brass, so they’re not identical but still make a fabulous pair. I also think it’s a fun detail that they resemble those cheap elastic/metal shirt sleeve holders that were so popular in the eighties, and when wearing long sleeved clothing I always use them to tuck the fabric up. These bangles have become a part of me, like a signature, and I almost feel naked without them.”
What would be your general advice to everyone envying this thing of yours?
– Enjoy the hunt! Great places to look are in flea markets, on eBay, and perhaps not too surprisingly where I work (Nitty Gritty). We have a brilliant selection of jewelry, it’s an important feature in store for me since it’s such a passion.
