Win a gift voucher at Myrorna!

IMG_4995-Återställd kopiera

One of the best ways to approach sustainable fashion is, of course, to buy things that already exist instead of using the planet’s resources to constantly produce new. It’s also our best tip to develop a personal style – finding the timeless pieces that have worked for years, and staying with those pieces forever. Today, Make it last highlights the work of Myrorna in Sweden.

IMG_4983-Återställd kopiera

Myrorna is the largest retain chain of second-hand goods in Sweden and collects more goods than any other organisation in the country. They have large sorting facilities in several places around the country, and 35 stores from Luleå in the north to Malmö in the south. Everything sold in the Myrorna stores are gifts that individuals and businesses contribute with, by coming to the stores or leaving things in the Myrorna collection containers at recycling centers or to their pickup trucks. Every year, over 40 million Swedish kronor goes to the Salvation Army’s social activities from Myrorna.

We’ve arranged for a competition that we hope you’ll like. You can win gift vouchers at Myrorna by entering a competition here at Make it last. All you have to do is share you best second hand-tip as a comment to this post.

My own best tip is to go to Myrorna or other second hand stores early in the day, when the stores are filled up with new items. My colleague Lisa’s best advice is to look for timeless pieces instead of seasonal trends. She constantly keeps an eye out for perfect jeans – a garment that usually gets better with time and suede och leather coats – materials that she wants to avoid buying new, and that also grows better with age.

IMG_4939 kopiera

All the items in the picture are from Myrorna.

So, hit us – what’s your best second hand hunting tip?

Share your tip in the comments below, and make sure to get your email right.

First price is a gift voucher worth 3 000 kr at Myrorna.
Second price is a gift voucher worth 2 000 kr at Myrorna.
Winners will be announced on Monday 1 December.

One of my favorite dishes at the moment

How would you guys feel about a recipe every week? I’m trying out all these new dishes lately and I would love to share some of them with you! This is what we did last night, It’s one of my favorit dishes at the moment actually.

Pesto

100 grams Walnuts
1 Lemon
0,5 Teaspoon of ginger
75 grams Parmesan
1 dl fresh Basil leafs
0,75 dl Olive oil
Sea salt & freshly grinned black pepper
You also need
Gnocchi
Fresh baby spinach
Place all the ingrediens except the olive oil of the pest into the bowl of a food processor and pulse a several times. While the food processor is running, slowly add the olive oil in a steady small stream. Adding the olive oil slowly, while the processor is running, will help it emulsify and help keep the olive oil from separating.

Stir in some salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil over medium heat and cook the Gnocchi for 3 minutes or until they rise to the surface. Use a slotted spoon to drain and transfer to a bowl. Mix the pesto with the Gnocchi and serve with a duvet of free baby spinach.

Three things to look for in a shirt

shirtShirt, Margaret Howell.

Everything you purchase should be something that you can see yourself wearing for a long long time.  The classic shirt is a really good staple all year around. Here are three things to look for in a before buying a shirt.
Fabric: Shirts are much like t-shirts, they are going to have to be washed quite frequently. When purchasing a new shirt, try to look for 100 % cotton (in the best of worlds, organic cotton) that has a bit of stiffness to it. These shirts tend to age very well and last much longer, and they don’t lose their fit like the mixed textile shirts sometimes do.
Seams: Always have a closer look att a shirts seams. It might sound like something really basic that one shouldn’t have to care too much about, but still, a garment in a good material but with bad seams doesn’t just look bad in the beginning, it will be horrible after a few washes.
Buttons: Nowadays almost all buttons are sewn on by a machine, this is a thing that a machine doesn’t exactly do better than a tailor. Always have an extra look, and make sure that the shirt comes with at least one extra button.

It was about 4 years ago. I felt a bit lost, both in life and in my personal style. (Strange how these two things can be connected. I often find that when I feel a bit lost in life, I also despise dressing in the morning.) I was working a lot with things that demanded me to be able to move easily. Running around attending fashion shows (which sometimes feels like a marathon; different locations, chasing people to take their photograph or to interview them, or spending a day in a studio dressing and undressing models when 50 percent of the time is spent on ones knees). When I think about what would be appropriate clothes for these occasions I see a pair of dungarees with loads of pockets, running shoes and a rucksack for the heavy camera and laptop. Still, working as a stylist I used to think people expected me to not look too much as a carpenter, I thought people would distrust my ability when it comes to styling if I didn’t look like I just jumped out of a fashion editorial. I’m happy to tell you that I no longer think people care, or maybe I just don’t care so much about other people’s opinions any more. Which is something I recommend to all!
Anyway, it was during this time, when I was trying to find a way to both myself and my style, that I had my first ”perfect shirt experience”. I found a light blue Oxford shirt from Ralph Lauren at Beyond retro. It was old and had been washed many times by it’s previous owner, the fabric was soft and the blue had faded a bit. The fit was perfect and It worked excellent with everything I already had in my wardrobe. I was trilled, every time I put it on I felt smart and well dressed. Since that day I’ve been looking to feel the same with all the garments I invest in for my wardrobe. I say invest since I think everything you purchase should be something that you can see yourself wear for a long long time.

They should be cared for, loved, and handed down to the next generation

I just love this interview with Stella McCartney. She’s talking to Paula Reed, fashion director of online retailer MyTheresa, about why she doesn’t believe in fast-fashion. Watch it here!

“When I design, it’s about designing pieces that are stand-out, staple, long-term commitments in your life. They’re made beautifully in the finest places in the world and should be cared for, loved, and handed down to the next generation. So for me, it’s not about ‘wear now, buy now’ or whatever. It’s about buy[ing] whenever you can buy it, whenever works for you, and wear it forever.”

It’s 40 days left until our surf trip. Which means time to build some muscles and get in to the best surf-shape possible. When I comes to my surfing, It’s the paddling muscles that needs to some extra attention. So today I had my first Crawl lesson! I’ve never been much for swimming, I use to like spending more time under the surface, pretending to be a mermaid that was diving for hidden treasures on the ocean floor. But today I was actually surprised how lovely it was to be in the warm pool when the snow was falling outside the window. Now I just need to work on my breathing while swimming. Sound pretty basic but it’s super hard the get it right! On my way back I bought some breakfast and now I’m sat at my new dinner table with a cup of black coffee working watching the snow falling outside the window.

Placemats, candles, cutting boards and a rug

My apartment is finally starting to come together. I’ve found a dinner table and chairs! Now I only need the smaller things for the kitchen. Like placemats, candles, cutting boards and a rug. Here are my favorite things from the Åhléns Bra val collection! Here is the entire Bra val collection!

This post is presented in collaboration with Åhléns.

I’m so happy with this blazer that I found at Beyond Retro a few weeks ago. I just had the shoulders adjusted and now it suits me perfectly! Jacket, Beyond retro. Sweater, H&M. Jeans and shoes, Acne Studios.

So, I here by give you the pictures of the designer, whom I think, created the most beautiful knits this fall. Michael Kors himself says that the inspiration is Big Sur meets with the Big City.
